Chilliwack & District Real Estate Board reports on Employment Trends

The unemployment rate in the lower mainland of British Columbia was up 1.8 percentage points in the first quarter of 2009 from the previous quarter to reach 6.6 per cent. This is the highest level since the second quarter of 2004. The unemployment rate now stands 2.9 per cent above its lowest level on record, reached in the first quarter of 2008.

A seasonally adjusted* total of 27,400 jobs were shed in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the previous quarter. The quarterly decline resulted from layoffs of 41,700 full-time positions, which were offset by the addition of 14,300 new part-time jobs.
