 2013 1st Time Buyer Survey

CMHC recently questioned almost 500 first-time buyers who had taken out mortgages. The results have just been released in its 2013 First-Time Home Buyers Survey.

The First-Time Homebuyers Survey highlights that:

CMHC is pleased to release the results of its First-Time Homebuyers Survey, providing mortgage professionals with valuable insight into this important segment of the home-buying market.

  • First-Time Buyers are young, highly educated and more likely than other buyers to have been born outside of Canada
  • Their housing requirements and reasons for buying vary widely, and they are more likely to move to a subsequent home sooner
  • First-Time Buyers have high information needs and seek knowledge from many sources
  • They interact with many individuals, and are more likely than other buyers to be influenced by family
  • First-Time Buyers do their homework, but are not as confident in their mortgage decisions as other buyers
  • Mortgage rates are a key priority when making mortgage decisions, but First-Time Buyers also value the personal service offered by mortgage professionals
